Different hat pattern

I'm trying something different on my wool hats, normally i would cast on 120 and work in the round for 3 inches and then knit 2 tog every stitch around, but to get a wider fitting hat today i will be trying something different, i will cast on 120 and work in the round for 3 inches and then knit 1 and then k2tg around, hoping this makes the whole hat larger, many of my hats are for a smaller head person, perfect for my mother in law....but there comes a time when we need to break away from the traditional style and try something new, i will post pictures of each style once they are done.
